4th Grade GT Math
Welcome to your first year in GT math! This year the students will be applying their critical thinking strategies to solve problems. They will be using their prior knowledge to solve new problems and analyze their discoveries. I understand that you may have many questions and concerns as parents, so please email me at [email protected] or call me at school (410) 313-6879.
Homework
The students will have homework every night, unless they completed an assessment or if it's a Friday. Most Mondays the students will complete a PoW (Problem of the Week) as a class. We will review the strategies the students implemented to solve the problem. The students will receive a PoW , that day, to complete at home and return on Friday. The PoW that is to be completed over the week will require similar strategies as the one completed in class. That Friday, the students will complete a PoW to be graded. This grade will be submitted into the students' Problem Solving grade.
During the beginning of a unit, your child's homework will include a study guide or resources for guidance. In many cases, the text book can also be used as a resource. The text book is purple and went home with the students the first week of school. Please use this as a resource and/or practice at home.
2014-2015 Essential Curriculum
Parent Preview Sheets:
Unit 1: Numbers in Base Ten
Unit 2: Operations and Algebraic Thinking

Tests and Quizzes
Typically, your child will know at least a day before a scheduled quiz. Many of the quizzes are short and cover a week of material. Each Friday, the students are also expected to complete a graded problem solving assignment. The quizzes are recorded within the students concept grades and the problem solving assignments within their problem solving grade.
Each student is responsible to record his/her scores for each test, quiz, and PoW. You will find the score sheet located in his/her binder. The last percentage in the score sheet is the student's current grade. Please keep your eyes open for it and check in every now and then.

The students will be completing one Olympiads Contest for each month starting in November. Each contest has five problems. The scores will not be submitted into their grades!! Feel free to visit our classroom on the days of our contests. The fourth graders will complete each Olympiad during their class time, 1:50-3:10. Hope you can make one!
